The ladder

Five hidden words: one of four letters, one of five, one of six, one of seven, and the Eight. All five are made from the same eight letters.
Type any word and press Enter. Every letter of it that belongs in the rung of that same length lights up exactly where it sits. Any order you like: a long guess tests more letters, so start long.
Guess one of the five exactly and that rung is yours, for free. Guess anything else and it costs a life. You have six.
Letters that are in no word go dark on the keyboard, so a wrong guess still tells you something.
Every word you guess shows its definition, right or wrong. No clock, no hints. Come back during the day and carry on.

Lose all six lives and the answers are revealed. Fill all five rungs and the ladder is yours.
